While some propellers for outboards are better than others, in most cases it is a matter of choosing a propeller that is right for the boat in question. The boat’s weight limit, the type of boating that is to be done, the motor type and other factors all determine which kind of outboard prop would be the best buy. Following are some points to consider when looking for a new outboard boat propeller.
Cost
Cost is an important factor, as some boat props are a lot more expensive than others. Those who are looking for an affordable outboard prop should buy one of the many three blade aluminum boat props on the market. On the other hand, a person who does much of their boating in a larger boat should invest in a four blade stainless steel prop. Those looking for increased performance, should stick with stainless props.
Diameter Size
The diameter size of the propeller should be considered carefully. Large propeller blades are ideal for large boats such as performance boats and bass boats; however, many other recreational boats work best with a three blade prop. It is also important to make sure the prop blades do not touch the engine.
RPM and Pitch
The boat’s maximum RPM should be noted before shopping for a new outboard boat propeller. The propeller should naturally be able to go at the speed that one wishes to travel at. At the same time, one does not want to buy an overly fast propeller, as this will burn up fuel unnecessarily.
Considering the propeller pitch is also important, as it helps to determine the speed the propeller will be able to travel at. “Pitch” is the measurement term used to define how fast the propeller would move without water slippage interfering. Most boat props list the pitch as the second number in the prop description.
These are just some of the points to consider when buying a new outboard prop. One will also want to choose the right prop diameter shape, exhaust type and brand name. It is also important to make sure the prop is compatible with the type of boat engine in question. Thankfully, there are many propellers for outboards on the market, so no matter what type of boat one has, he or she should not have a problem finding a reasonably priced boat propeller that is well made, reasonably priced and compatible with the boat engine and type of boating that is to be done.
